When was the laser invented?

Many moons ago, Albert Einstein set the foundation for what would one day become an emitting, magnificent laser. As early as 1917, this genius was putting forward theories on how different atoms could interact to be able to create a laser light. The word itself, laser, is in fact an acronym for 'Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation'. 

Fast forward a few decades to May 16, 1960, and the glorious laser was born. 

The invention of the laser 

Theodore Maiman, an experimental physicist, was the inventor of this piece of technology that has since gone on to change the world. Mr Maiman was conducting research at the Hughes Research Laboratory in California, when he shined a high-power flash lamp onto a ruby rod with silver-coated surfaces, as reported in the book A Century of Nature: Twenty-One Discoveries that Changed Science and the World. The rest, as they say, is history.

The laser has been a big part of influencing other inventions in a wide range of industries. For example, in the entertainment world it lead to creating CD-ROMS and DVDs. For medical professionals, the laser has been a huge help. It's one of the biggest helpers for performing surgery on people with poor vision to grant them better eyesight.
